Inovora India Challenge "Second Life of Packaging", COVID-19 categoryreported · sourceNirma University newsletter, Students page: the COVID 19 category winner of the Inovora India Challenge, 17 July to 4 August 2020, run by Inovora India Design Studio with Nirma University, Strate and IICD Jaipur; 24 entries in 7 categories. The entry deck is titled Second Life of Packaging Internships.
The brief was to replace disposable gloves with something that keeps your hand off unknown surfaces, without adding to the pile of COVID-19 waste. Pinchy is a shield for three fingers, folded from a flat strip of packaging card. My entry deck calls it fully up-cycled.
I started with a survey that got 42 responses, about how COVID-19 had changed shopping and the packaging people handle. Then I sketched. A sketch notes the tendency to use three fingers, and that is what the shield covers. The failures are written on the sketches: it keeps opening up, it does not fit all hands, and a band was not very stable and restricted finger movement. How it adjusts to a hand is in the sliding-joint sketches.
It is a concept with prototypes, not a product. The material-reduction and coverage percentages from the competition entry were estimates and are not shown as stats here.
